Museums at Night in Lodz!

OJiKJ will participate in this year's Museums at Night event in Lodz. We start on Saturday 17.05 at 18:00 and finish at 24:00.

Be sure to join us at the Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz, pl.Wolności 14, as we'vre prepared a number of attractions for you:

1. Japanese calligraphy
2. Ink painting - suibokuga
3. Origami - paper folding
4. Writing your names in Japanese
5. Hand-made postcards sales

The event will be run by Mr Masakatsu Yoshida and the Japenese volunteers with the support of OJiKJ members.

Interesting events!

We've received news about two events that you might find interesting:

  1. XXX European Bonsai Convention. The event will take place 8-11.05.2014 at Centrum IASE, Wrocław, Wystawowa 1. You'll find more information including a detailed program here.
  2. The first Polish Calligraphy Competition. It will take place on 7.06.2014 at Żurawia 20a lok.7, 00-515 Warszawa. Apart from the possibility of winning great awards, the participants have an opportunity to have their works will be displayed during Matsuri – Picnic with the Japanese Culture and later at Wydział Informacji i Kultury Ambasady Japonii in Warsaw.

Photos from the Japanese Day in Piotrkow Trybunalski!

On 22 January 2014 there was a "Japanese Day" in Piotrków Trybunalski organised by Instytut Historii Uniwersytetu Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach, Filia w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim.
OJiKJ also participated in the event - there were calligrphy workshops run by Mr Masakatsu Yoshida. You'll find the photos in our gallery.
Other attractions included a Kyudo show by Mr Janusz Surma, a Kendo show by the students of Mr Włodzimierz Małecki, origami and suibokuga workshops by Barbara Yoshida.

Polish caligraphy in Sendai International Center!

This year the participants of our suibokuga and calligraphy workshops sent New Year wishes to Japan. 2014 is the year of the horse, which is clearly visible in the artworks which were displayed in the Sendai International Center. Japanese ink painting classes - Suibokuga!

 

We sincerely invite you to join our Suibokuga (traditional Japanese ink painting) classes which are run by Barbara Yoshida. The first meeting will take place today 15 November from 16:30. Please bring 5PLN with you to cover the cost of painting materials - we offer you ink, paper & paintbrushes.

Photos from the kakemono & bonsai exhibition!

 

We've just uploaded photos from the kakemono  and bonsai exhibition in Palmiarnia Łódzka. The exhibition was open to visition on 4-6 October. On Saturday there was a free bonsai forming workshop. Every person who brought their own plant could consult it with the present experts and get to know something interesting about forming trees. On Sunday at 12:00 there was a tree forming presentation by Dariusz Zając.

The exhibition was organised under the patronage of Polska Asocjacja Bonsai and Łódzki Ośrodek Języka i Kultury Japonii. The trees were presented by PAB members and bonsai enthusiasts from łódzkie and wielkopolskie voivodeships: Darek Zając, Rafał Kulesza, Janusz Graliński, Marek Gez, Krzysztof Małkiewicz, Sławomir Drozda, Krzysztof Kowalski. The kakemono paintings which accompanied the event belong to the collection of Dariusz Szpakowski.

We've just been contacted by the leader of a Warsaw Japanese-themed initiative "Kimono de Jack" aiming at promoting knowledge about traditional Japanese clothing - kimono and related accessories. Mrs Shiunko Nozaki, a calligraphy master in Lodz this weekend!

 

A distinguished artist, Mrs Shiunko Nozaki - a calligraphy master known in many countries all over the world, is coming to Lodz following the invitation of Ośrodek Języka i Kultury Japonii im. prof. Ryochu Umedy in Lodz.

 

OJiKJ is most pleased to invite you to a workshop, which will be run by our special guest. The workshop will take place in Muzeum
Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz on 18.05.2013r (Saturday) at 11:00 as well as at 18:00 during the "Night of the Museums"
. All OJiKJ Members and other fans of Japanese culture are sincerely encouraged to join in!

We would also like to give you some more information about our guest. Mrs Shiunko Nozaki is the President of the "Shiuko Shioin School" Association in Yokohama and a permanent juror of the International Calligraphy Exhibitions "SANKEI". She is an artist with a special prestige among Japanese calligraphers and an organizer of many calligraphy exhibitions in Japan and abroad, among which there was also an exhibition by artists from Poland. She was also a laureate of International Calligraphy Competitions numerous times. Her works are presented all around Japan, in China, France and many other countires. She is known as a specialist of hiragana signs written with fast gestures.

Miejski Ośrodek Kultury w Ozorkowie sincerely invites everyone who is interested in Japanese culture to join the "Japanese Culture Day" in Ozorków on 23th May 2013 at 17.00. The event will take place in MOK ul. Wigury 14 in Ozorków.

Theatre play for kids: "The Fisherman and the Underwater Kingdom"!

We're happy to inform that during this year's Japanese Culture Days there will be another Japanese-themed event for children: a theatre play "The Fisherman and the Underwater Kingdom" based on a japanese legend "Urashima Taro" will be performed in "Baśniowa Kawiarenka" Children Theatre ul. Tea ceremony meeting in Manggha Museum!

We've just received an interesting piece of informaction about cyclical meetings with the Japanese tea ceremony organized by Muzeum Sztuki i Techniki Japońskiej Manggha and Senshinkai Chadou Urasenke Tankoukai in Cracow. The meetings take place on every second Sunday of the month since 14.10.2012 till 9.06.2013. You'll find all details in the poster here.

The Medal of the Commission of National Education for Mr Masakatsu Yoshida!

We're happy to announce that Mr Masakatsu Yoshida has just been honoured with the Medal of the Commission of National Education. All who wish to attend the offical ceremony during which the Medal will be handed to Mr Yoshida are welcome to do so. The ceremony will take place on 15th Oct at 10:00 in Aula im. Profesora Wacława Szuberta, ul. Lindleya 5 in Łódź. Please notice that you have to confirm your presence in advance by notifying Dział Spraw Pracowniczych, (42) 635 41 35 or (42) 635 40 34. Japanese Culture Days 2012!

We're happy to announce date of the upcoming Japanese Culture Days 2012. This year the event organiised by OJiKJ will take place between 14 - 17 November in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Łódź. The main theme will be TABU, which had a strong influence on the everyday lives of Japanese people. Through tabu the Japanese intended to preserve customs passed down from their ancestors. People from the western countries are often surprised to discover that in Japan tabu still functions with an equal force today as it did in past ages. Because of this Japanese ceremonies, beliefs and superstitions are to be respected. It is necessary to understand and abide by certain norms, which are deeply engraved in the mentality of the Japanese and which are one of the means of preserving the native culture.

 

We sincerely invite you to participate in the following lectures:

  5. Buddhist dolls and ceremonies
  6. Symbols in kakemono paintings


The above lectures will be connected with viewing of the following movies:

There will also be a number of workshops to choose from:

  1. Kites building - symbols connected with kites and the ceremony of kite flying
  2. Chigiriye - paper works
  3. Origami - paper folding
  4. Suibokuga - traditional Japanese ink painting
  5. Calligraphy


All of the above events will take place in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Łódź

We also invite to you to see the Japanese dolls and other traditional artifacts from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Babscy owners of 'Villa Japonica" in Wisły.
The number and diversity of exhibits in this most unusual collection will be displayed in Poland for the very first time during the Japanese Culture Days 2012. The exhibition will be open for visitors between 14 - 30 November in the temporary exhibitions room on the 1st floor in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Łódź.

Interesting Japanese events this weekend!

The usual Saturday's Suibokuga class will take place between 10:00 and 12:00 this Saturday in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz.

 

The 2nd Japanese Day in Ośrodek Kultury in Niesułków, in Gmina Stryków will take place in the second half of the day, after the Suibokuga class.

Meeting with the Japanese Ambassador!

We'll happy to informan that two representatives of OJiKJ (Jadwiga Mnich i Dariusz Szpakowski) participated in a meeting organized by the Japanese Ambassador in Poland - Mr Makoto Yamanaka. The meeting was organized on the anniversary of the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan and representatives from various organizations who gathered funds for those citizens of Japan who suffered in the disearster were invited. The guest of honour was Polish President's Wife, who gave a short speech.

Information from the last OJiKJ organizational meeting!

On 22.10.2011 there was an organizational meeting of the OJiKJ Members. During the meeting we first met the new Japanese volunteers who will be staying in Poland with us this year. Their names are: Noriko Ishimaru, Takae Fuchigami, Manami Yoshikawa, Midori Fukui, Erika Nakanishi. We are glad to welcome them in Poland and wish them a pleasant stay full of interesting attractions.You'll find the photos of the volunteers in our gallery here.

 

The meeting also concerned organization of this years Japanese Culture Days. We discussed the program thoroughly. It will be soon available on our website. We also talked about possible new OJiKJ activities and the key idea was to organise cooking lessons - we're now checking the feasibility of this concept. The usual suibokuga (ink painting) course wiill start in November - more information soon to be published.

Reminder about Japanese language courses!

Because we received a lot of e-mails with questions about the Japanese language courses organized in this academic year, we decided to publish some additional information for you.

In the academic year 2011/2012 we offer two types of courses:

 

1) Paid courses:

Classes for all groups take place on Thursdays at 17:00 in the building of Chemia Spożywcza at the Technical University of Lodz (ask in room F1).
Everyone interested in joining this course is asked to come on Thursday and sign in for an appropriate group depending on the language level.

The cost of classes is as follows:
- students: 500 PLN for the entire year
- secondary school pupils: 400 PLN for the entire year
- others: 600 PLN for the entire year.

 

2) Free courses for the students of the Technical University of Lodz:

All interested students are asked to come to class and sign in for a selected course (depending on your language level). All information about the class hours and rooms are available from the International Faculty of Engineering website and on the posters in the IFE building (ul. Żwirki 36, 90-924 Łódź).

Information about a Japanese language course and studies in Japan!

Firstly, we'd like to invite you to participate in a Japanese language course. More details below:

Secondly, we want to give you some information about the possibility of participating in a study program in Japan.

On the 5th October in Muzeum Sztuki i Techniki Japońskiej Manggha there will be an informatory seminar by the Tokyo University concerning a newly launched 4-year study program (specializations: Asian studies and Environment, all courses in English, the knowledge of Japanese is not required)

The program starts in October 2012. The recruitment process is currently open. The Tokyo University plans to select a number of students from among the Polish aplicants, who will receive grants.

The offer is for secondary school pupils and students of the initial years of universities. Please note that this is not a student exchange, but a full study program!

Bonsai exhibition!

After the summer break we'd like to invite you to a bonsai exhibition, which will take place on 9-11th September in Palmiarnia Łódzka. The event is accompanied by an exhibition of kakemono paintings. On Saturday (10.09) there will be a bonsai workshop starting at 11:00. Feel free to bring your own trees for forming. On Sunday (11.09) there will be a bonsai forming presentation carried out by visiting experts.

Trip to Modzerowskie-Długie Lake!

Last weekned members of OJiKJ and our Japanese volunteers went on a trip to Modzerwoskie-Długie Lake (Kujawy District). The weather was perfect and there were many attractions - barbeque, calligraphy classes, campfire, long walks and all sorts of other forms of amusement. Meeting with Ambasador Yuichi Kusumoto!

On the 31st May a meeting with the Japanese Ambasador - Mr. Yuicki Kusumoto - took place in Gorzów. The Ambasador met the members of Japansese training alumni association. He spoke of the current situation in Japan after the earthquake and about the Polish-Japanese relations. The assembled guests were also informed about the upcoming charity concert for Japan which will take place in July in Łazienki in Warsaw. President of the association, Grzegorz Gębala, and Dariusz Szpakowski offered the Ambasador products of the Polish soil - traditional bread, garlic chive and local tinctures.

Japanese paintings exhibition!

We're very happy to announce that there is a very interesting exhibition of Japanese ink paintings in Muzeum Lubuskie in Gorzowie. The Muzeum borrowed over 100 paintings from Dariusz Szpakowski, a member of OJiKJ. There are 20 very rare paintings from 17th and 18th century. More information on the Museum's website.

Night of the Museums 2011!

This year's Night of the Museums was a fenomenal event. It's estimated that almost 10000 people visited Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz. Many of them took part in the attractions offered by OJiKJ, namely calligraphy, suibokuga and origami workshops and tea ceremony show. The visitors were delighted to participate in the event and very interested in what we showed them. We hope that next year the Night of the Museums will attract at least as much interest as this year. Thank you all for your participation and engagement!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: trip to Modzerowskie-Długie Lake!

Starting now you can sign in for a trip to Modzerowskie-Długie Lake (Kujawy District). Lodging in summer cottages ("Brda"-type), 7-8 persons per cottage. Equipped kitchen is also available along with bed sheets, toilets and bathrooms with showers. Also there's a barbeque place, boats and water bikes for rent, beach volleyball place,...

 

We leave at 6:00 on 11.06.2011 (from in front of the Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne, Plac Wolności 14) and come back at 21:00 on 12.06.2011 to the same place. Underaged participants require written permission from their parents.

Events in May!

May will be a month full od events related to Japanese culture. Below we present a schedule:

 

1) 7-8 May - a spring event in the Botanical Garden organised by OJiKJ.

7 May (Satrurday)

  • 11:00 - opening of the event
  • 12:00 - 13:00 - Tea Ceremony.

8 May (Sunday)

  • 11:00 - opening of the event
  • 13:00 - 14:00 - Tea Ceremony.

During the entire event we will be raising money for the citizens of Japan who suffered because of the tsunami. We will be selling small Japan-themed hand-made souvenirs and other items. The entire income will be transferred to the Japanese people in need.

 

2) 14 May - Night of the Museums at Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz (pl.Wolności 14)

  • 18:00 - opening of the event in Ryochu Umeda room, 3rd floor. There will be calligraphy workshops, origami classes and praban.

Botanical Garden in May!

7-8 May there will be a spring event in the Botanical Garden organised by OJiKJ. We plan to have suibokuga ink paining workshops, origami workshops and a tea ceremony show plus some other attractions. Details will be available soon.

But more importantly the aim of this event will be to rise money for the citizens of Japan who suffered because of the tsunami. We will be selling small Japan-themed hand-made souvenirs and the entire income will be transferred to the Japanese Embassy.

Japanese Days in the Botanical Garden!

This year's annual event in the Botanical Garden in Lodz (ul. Retkińska 39/65) will take place between 25th and 27th of February. Below we present the initial version of the event's schedule:

25th  February: EXHIBITION: Japanese gardens and Japanese culture.


26th February (Saturday) (starting at 11:00)
Lectures:
1. „History of Polish-Japanese relations” – Bartłomiej Krogulec,
2. „Influence of manga and anime on Japanese youths" – Magdalena Kociuba,
3. „History of religion in Japan” – Mikołaj Zielonka,
4. „Stories written in signs” – Marta Dabrowska.
Workshops :
1. Ikebana – art of arranging flowers –Yukiko Ikeda  
2. Calligraphy – OJiKJ volunteers.

 

27th February (Sunday) (starting at 11:00)
Lectures:
1. „Festivals in Japan” – Lena Sałata,
2. „Image of woman in Japanese culture" – Natalia Rydlewska vel Ryglewska,
3. „Japanese plants in our gardens” – Dariusz Szpakowski,
4. „Stories written in signs” – Marta Dąbrowska.

Workshops:
1. Tea ceremony "Chado" - Tomoko Sekiguchi,
2. Suibokuga – ink painting – Barabara Yoshida,
3. Praban – Japanese decorations – OJiKJ volunteers,
4. Kimono dressing - OJiKJ volunteers.

Invitation to a bonsai exhibition

During February we're making a winter break, which mean there will be no suibokuga or caligraphy classes on Saturdays until March!

'Goodbye party' for Mrs Yoko Aso.

Because Yoko-san is leaving Poland very soon, we'd like to say goodbye to her and thank her for everything she taught us during the tea ceremony and kitsuke classes. We're organising a goodbye party on Saturday (29.01.2011) at 14:00 in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne w Łodzi, pl. Wolności 14. You're all welcome. If you can, bring food or sweets for the party!

The end of our tea ceremony course.

Saddly it is time to finish our 'chado' - tea ceremony - lessons. Mrs Yoko Aso, our wonnderful teacher, is leaving Poland soon and is flying back to Japan. We wish to thank her for everything she's done for us - for all the tea ceremony and kitsuke lessons, for all the help she gave us during different events and festivals we organised so far and for her smile and warmth that she always had for us. We are extremely grateful!

Important changes in the schedule for the Japanese Days 2010!

This year the annual Japanese Culture Days festival takes place in November. Below we present the updated schedule. Please, pay attention to the changes for Thursday and Friday! Some minor changes may still occur. We will keep you informed.  All events will take place in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz, pl. Wolności 14, unless stated otherwise.

Haiku exhibition - grand opening today!

A group of visitors from Hokkaido, Japan will present an exhibition of HAIKU (Japanese short poems) about Chopin in Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne in Lodz.
